Oak Brook, IL (January 3, 2025) – SLAS, the Society of Laboratory Automation and Screening, announces the addition of three new board members who will carry out three-year terms beginning January 1, 2025.
Marybeth Burton, M.S. — Merck, USA
Marybeth Burton, M.S., is the Executive Director, Discovery Sample Management at Merck. Burton studied at LaSalle University (USA) where she earned her B.S. in biology and French, followed by a M.S in information science from Rutgers University (USA). With over 25 years of experience advocating for pharmaceutical industry automation, Burton is passionate about exploring new technologies, optimizing drug discovery processes and fostering diverse, high-performing teams. An active SLAS member, she has gained invaluable insights into automation and engineering innovations while leading groundbreaking projects, including establishing a first-generation automated compound storage and plate production facility. She is committed to outreach and education and aims to promote knowledge exchange, mentorship, and collaboration within the SLAS community. As a Board member, she will champion initiatives that strengthen the laboratory automation field and drive next-generation innovation.
Madhu Lal-Nag, Ph.D. — InSphero AG, Switzerland
Madhu currently serves as the chief scientific officer for InSphero AG (Switzerland). Her journey with SLAS began in 2002 as a volunteer organizer. Soon after, the Society became a valuable resource for her as she began working in high-throughput screening, building 3D tumor models. Over the past 11 years, Lal-Nag has leveraged SLAS resources to support the 3D in vitro models community, serving as a presenter, workshop organizer, educator and co-editor of the SLAS Discovery Special Issue for 3D models and as a Program Committee member. Her passion for advancing SLAS’s mission drives her vision to integrate biology with technology, include diverse stakeholder perspectives and empower the next generation of leaders. Lal-Nag is committed to bringing honesty, integrity and innovation to the SLAS Board of Directors.
Glauco R. Souza, Ph.D. — Greiner Bio-One, USA
Glauco Souza is the Director of Global Business Development and Innovation, Bioscience at Greiner Bio-One (USA). Since joining SLAS in 2015, Souza has demonstrated unwavering commitment through various leadership roles, including chairing the Knowledge Content & Delivery Council, serving on the Americas Scientific Program Committee and contributing as a guest editor for SLAS Discovery. Souza will bring a unique, global perspective backed by entrepreneurial achievements, patents and publications through his accomplishments as a former CEO (Nano3D Biosciences). His background extends to academia as he previously taught at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the Internal Medicine Department as an adjunct assistant professor and was a member of the Industry Advisory Board at the University of Houston's Department of Biomedical Engineering. His multidisciplinary expertise and strategic vision position them to advance SLAS's mission and serve its global, diverse community.
SLAS board members are representative of the diverse SLAS membership, which includes academic, industry and government researchers as well as developers and providers of laboratory automation technologies. The board is responsible for strategic leadership of the society and advises on the future direction of the society and its programs.
